The Weekly Round-Up – 08/02-14/02

“I’ve put this off for far too long”. Bilbo’s got a point. This week I’ll finally get down to talking about the elephant in the room… the future John Constantine. There have been all sorts of rumours and speculation regarding the show’s potential cancellation – many of which started long before its mid-season finale – and thus, #SaveConstantine was born.

Constantine Banner - Season 1

But does it actually deserve to be ‘saved’? The NBC show has failed to hit the ratings heights of other superhero or supernatural affairs on network TV. Sadly, this has all come down to its terrible time-slot, without which, I’m fairly certain the show’s future would be a lot more secure. On the whole though, I’ve enjoyed it. It may not have been consistent, but it was certainly entertaining TV at times. Hopefully we’ll see you on SyFy John!

Joining Constantine‘s season (series?) finale this week are new episodes from the likes of ArrowGotham and more…

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Banner - Title

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, FOX – Windbreaker City

TV’s best comedy delivers a welcome sequel to last year’s excellent Tactical Village. It was great to see the gang back in action, with Jake taking the role of ‘Gruber’s brother’ in another fun shoot-em-up. Elsewhere, the Holt/Gina pairing works to perfection – 9/10

Gotham, FOX – The Scarecrow

Don’t get me wrong, there were parts of this that I loved: Maroni and Falcone talking business, Fish Mooney’s dark new escapade… Yet Gotham never fails to make a potentially interesting plot so procedural. The Scarecrow fails to live up to it’s titular billing – 7/10

Agent Carter Banner - Title

Agent Carter, ABC – A Sin To Err

The stakes are raised this week, as Peggy finds herself up against both the SSR and the mysterious Leviathan. Agent Carter has turned into one of those rare shows which can sustain a gripping main storyline, without sacrificing its light-hearted, fun tone – 8/10

The Flash, The CW – The Nuclear Man

Much like Firestorm himself, this was an episode of two halves. The titular protagonist was outstanding, paying off several weeks of build-up with some great character work with Caitlin and stunning visuals. The Barry/Linda/Iris love triangle? Not so much – 8/10

Wednesday, 11/02

Arrow Banner

Arrow, The CW – Canaries

Maybe I’m being too cynical, or maybe I’ve had my eyes opened – I’m just not enjoying Arrow as much anymore. A lot of stuff was solid (Laurel, Quentin, the Island tease), but Thea’s relationships with her brother, father and greasy DJ have been terrible – 7/10

The Blacklist, NBC – Ruslan Denisov

The Blacklist subverted expectations this week – topping the mid-season finale. This complex, politically-charged episode was buoyed by some fantastic guest turns. Det. Wilcox’s investigation into Keen seems like a fresh new storyline to explore – 9/10

Elementary Banner - Title

Elementary, CBS – The Female Of The Species

Despite the flawed weekly mystery, this may have been one of my favourite episodes of Season 3. From watching Bell/Sherlock team-up, to Lucy Liu’s impressive direction (that arrest scene…), to Moriarty emerging from the shadows – it was fun and stylish – 8/10

Constantine Banner - Title

Constantine, NBC – Waiting For The Man

Given how this season was curtailed, it’s hard to blame the writers for a finale that felt like a bit of a ‘non-event’. The closing ten minutes made for some sublime TV – dark, gripping and twist-heavy. Sadly, the rest of the episode was completely forgettable – 7/10
