The Weekly Round-Up – 25/01-31/01

For the first time since the mid-season winter break, we’ve got a full slate of shows! Well, except for The Blacklist – but even that returns next week! Oddly, In the absence of Doctor Who and Homeland, 2015 has gotten off to a pretty quiet start Last term’s other heavy hitters Arrow and The Flash have been quiet, leaving it up to other shows to shine…

Elementary - Season 3 - Kitty

One such show has been Elementary. While overall noticeably weaker than the two seasons that preceded it, Season 3 has continued to grind along, churning out a few decent weekly mysteries – with some truly fascinating character work. This week, it comes towards its own sort ‘mid-season conclusion’, as it wraps up the divisive Kitty arc. I for one have enjoyed Ophelia Lovibond’s turn on the show, and can’t wait to see how it ends…

Check out below what I thought of this week’s batch of episodes, from the likes of GothamBrooklyn Nine-Nine and much more…

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Banner - Title

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, FOX – The Defence Rests

Another very funny episode for the 99, but we also had a bit of emotional depth this week. While Peralta & Sophia’s relationship meant very little to me, I enjoyed the way they handled the break-up. Elsewhere, Raymond Butt Holt was on fire. What a man – 8/10

The Blacklist returns 05/02 (next week!)

Gotham, FOX – Welcome Back, Jim Gordon

Well that’s a shame. After two more-than-decent episodes, Gotham has reverted back to it’s usual dull, and incredibly silly norm. The drop in quality appears to coincide with returns for Selina & Bruce – as well as an expanded role for Fish. Hmm… – 7/10

Agent Carter Banner - Title

Agent Carter, ABC – The Blitzkrieg Button

My newest show also happens to be one of the most consistent. Agent Carter balanced the absence of a gripping plot this week with some fantastic performances. Watching Peggy square up to Howard was fascinating, while Chad Michael Murray also impressed – 8/10

The Flash, The CW – The Sound And The Fury

Perhaps this is reflective of how good The Flash ended up being last term, but I’ve been a little disappointed with its return. It was nice to see more of Cisco’s back story, but the rest of this episode was hardly memorable. Too many chess references, dammit! 😛 – 8/10

Wednesday, 28/01

Arrow Banner

Arrow, The CW – Midnight City

Close, but no cigar. The combination of Arsenal and Canary was interesting, but there’s not enough going on in this episode to make it a memorable one. Palmer continues to be the stand-out player – his interaction with Vinnie Jones’ Brick was wonderful – 8/10

cropped-big-bang-theory.jpg

The Big Bang Theory, CBS – The Anxiety Optimization

For years I waited for Raj to strike gold and finally get the girl – now he’s got one, the most entertaining thing to come of it has been a game named ‘Emily Or Cinnamon’. TBBT proved once again this week that it’s not not funny – just mildly entertaining – 7/10

Elementary Banner - Title

Elementary, CBS – The One That Got Away

Arguably the best Elementary episode of the season – and easily the most emotionally gripping, the show’s tense send-off to Kitty didn’t disappoint. Tonally very dark, it was nice to see the writers stick to their guns with that bittersweet conclusion. Well done – 9/10

Friday, 30/01

Constantine Banner - Title

Constantine, NBC – A Whole World Out There

It was nice to see John striking out on his own this time, Zed & Chas have begun to get a little repetitive when they’ve got nothing to do. I enjoyed the Lost reunion – we got Michael, Faraday and Ethan in the same episode! They were all on top form here – 8/10

Catch-Up, N/A

It’s nothing too important, but I thought it’d i’d just mention I finally finished Lost! I may end up writing a Season 6 review at some point – but first I need to sort out my ones for Homeland (Season 4) and Doctor Who (Season 8). Damn priorities! 😉
