The Weekly Round-Up – 18/01-24/01

Another week (and a bit…), another late post. This time I’ve got no excuse – it just took me forever to get around to watching the latest Constantine episode. And here’s the kicker: it wasn’t even very good. Ah well! Thankfully, it was joined by several other shows – including welcome returns for The CW’s very own World’s Finest: ArrowThe Flash.

The Flash Banner - Season 1

Upon checking my ratings for both superhero shows, I was shocked to realise that the two are so close. The Scarlet Speedster’s spin-off is doing far better than it should arguably doing in it’s first season – balancing lofty expectations with a wonderfully light tone and interesting weekly stories. And while Arrow has been at a similar level this year, there’s a case that the Emerald Archer has been overshadowed by his buddy!

Joining these three were new episodes from the ever-improving Gotham, and the ever-enigmatic Elementary. Check ’em out below!

The Blacklist returns 05/02

Gotham, FOX – What The Little Bird Told Him

A second successful episode in a row for Gotham, on the back of its mid-season return. The emphasis on the gang war between Falcone/Fish/Penguin/Maroni highlighted the show’s strongest sub-plot, while The Electrocutioner entertained once again – 8/10

Agent Carter didn’t air this week

The Flash, The CW – Revenge Of The Rogues

Well it was cheesy, but it was a hell of a lot of fun too! The Flash returns, and with it comes the Prison Break duo playing Captain Cold and Heat Wave: of course it was gonna be cheesy! A good return, but maybe lacked the dramatic edge of recent episodes – 8/10

Arrow Banner

Arrow, The CW – Left Behind

I’ve finally realised that Arrow simply isn’t as good as it was last season. That still doesn’t stop it from being a damn fine show! Yes, Oliver’s reincarnation was rushed, but watching the likes of Roy, Dig, Merlyn and finally Laurel step up in his absence was nice – 8/10

The Big Bang Theory didn’t air this week

Elementary Banner - Title

Elementary, CBS – The Illustrious Client

Wow. Once again, I was left incredibly mixed feelings from Elementary. I loved the Girl With A Dragon Tattoo vibe, mixed with the higher stakes, and Kitty going off the rails. The final reveal seemed really dumb – ’til I realised it was classic Conan Doyle – 8/10

Constantine Banner - Title

Constantine, NBC – Quid Pro Quo

Hmm. If I can’t seem to sit through a forty minute episode without being distracted by the perils of the internet on six different occasions, then there’s clearly something wrong here. I was really starting to like this show, but this was a total letdown. A damn shame – 6/10
