The Weekly Round-Up – 11/01-17/01

Here it is, the second of two weeks that I missed while doing boring real worldy things. Technically, this one’s not actually late – it applies to the week just gone by. Most notably, it features the arrival of a new show (more on that in a sec), a few returning episodes and… nothing much else actually. When will The Flash and Arrow return, dammit?!

Agent Carter Banner - Season 1

However, the little excitement that did come from this week came in the form of one Agent Carter – played fantastically by The First Avenger‘s Hayley Atwell. Spinning-off the first Marvel Studios Captain America movie, it’s a show set in the 40s, dealing with Peggy Carter’s ups and downs as a female agent, breaking through in a heavily male-dominated environment – and it’s, so far, been very impressive. It’s a shame it only lasts 8 episodes.

So read on to see what I thought of Agent Carter‘s opening three episodes, along with a return for Constantine too…

Catch-Up, N/A

Agent Carter Banner - Title

Agent Carter, ABC – Now Is Not The End

A decent start from Marvel’s only leading lady. Hayley Atwell brings heart, charisma and plenty of 1940’s badassery to the table as Peggy, while surrounded by a talented cast of supporting actors – the highlight so far being James D’Arcy’s Edwin Jarvis – 8/10

Agent Carter Banner - Title

Agent Carter, ABC – Bridge And Tunnel

Perhaps not quite as impressive as the pilot, this second episode certainly managed to be more explosive. The Carter/Jarvis partnership continues to dominate, but subtler turns from both Enver Gjokaj and Chad Michael Murray have been great to watch too – 8/10

Sunday, 11/01

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Banner - Title

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, FOX – Payback

There were two great sub-plots this week. Peralta’s efforts to keep Terry’s pregnancy a secret, showcased their great chemistry, but the Holt/Santiago buddy-cop act takes the cake, thanks to subtly hilarious performances from the show’s two best actors – 9/10

Monday, 12/01

The Blacklist returns 08/02

Gotham did not air this week

Tuesday, 13/01

Agent Carter Banner - Title

Agent Carter, ABC – Time And Tide

Arguably Agent Carter‘s strongest episode to date. I’m really enjoying the slightly harder edge Peggy is showing after the events of the first movie. She’s tougher, stronger, and demands to be respected in this male-dominated world. Atwell is very good – 8/10

The Flash returns 20/01

Wednesday, 14/01

Arrow returns 21/01

Thursday, 15/01

The Big Bang Theory did not air this week

Elementary Banner - Title

Elementary, CBS – Seed Money

I confess to not really paying much attention to the first 15 mins here, such has my lack of enthusiasm for this show has become. However, upon finally concentrating on the episode, and all of its (delightfully) grim details, I had a blast. I can’t explain it – 8/10

Friday, 16/01

Constantine Banner - Title

Constantine, NBC – The Saint Of Last Resorts, Part II

Constantine continues to go from strength-to-strength, even while the threat of cancellation looms over it. The shackled plot structure is nullified by some great guest characters, along with another devilish performance from Matt Ryan – 8/10
